Jay Reatard
http://www.jayreatard.com/

Matador Singles ‘08 compiles six progressively-more-limited-edition 7” singles from Memphis manwonder Jay Reatard, released throughout the latter half of 2008 on Matador Records.

The collection features all six singles (with the exception of Deerhunter’s cover of Jay’s ‘Oh, It’s Such A Shame’ that appears on single #4) in chronological order, adding an extra track, ‘I’m Watching You’, Jay’s attempt to write a song in the style of Kiwi songsmiths The Tall Dwarfs.

Every song is a perfect pop-punk gem, but the collection evolves interestingly (and erratically) from punk to pop. As Pitchfork said on the subject, “In this short space of time, Reatard has cranked out more memorable songs than some acts do in their whole careers.”

Jay likes Pee Wee Herman and the Wipers and is currently at work on a new album to be released on Matador in Spring 2009. - windishagency.com

Black Hollies
http://www.myspace.com/theblackhollies

New Jersey’s Black Hollies emerged in 2005 with a mix of ’60s-styled garage rock, psychedelia, and gritty soul. Initially formed as a side project by three members of the hard rock group Rye Coalition, the quartet signed with Brooklyn’s Ernest Jennings Record Co. and officially debuted in 2006 with the self-produced Crimson Reflections. Bandmates Justin Angelo Morey (vocals, bass), Herb Wiley (guitar), Scott Bolasci (drums), and Jon Gonnelli (guitar) supported the release with a slew of live dates, during which they played alongside fellow garage rock revivalists the Fleshtones and began tailoring their clothing to reflect the songs’ retro appeal. Bolasci left the band and was replaced by Nick Ferrante, and the Black Hollies returned to their ’60s state of mind with 2008’s Casting Shadows. One year later, they chose to record at an outside studio for the first time, resulting in the release of the atmospheric, organ-fueled Softly Towards the Light in early October.
